A fly, Cordylobia anthropophaga, with a yellow body and grey markings, found in sub-Saharan Africa, where its larva is a subcutaneous parasite of man and other animals. Also used attrib. and absol. to designate the skin disease caused by the larva, esp. as tumbu disease or tumbu sickness.
1898Army Med. Dept. Rep. XL. 466 There was one instance of what appears to be a rare parasite... It is known to the Mendi people as Tumbu sickness and is said to be caused by the Tumbu fly laying eggs in the skin.1908Jrnl. R. Army Med.
