▪ I. red rot
[f. red a. + rot n.1]
a. Fungal decay of standing trees or of timber characterized by red-brown rotted tissue; esp. that caused by Trametes pini in conifers.

Trees 1 The damping-off of seedling beeches,..the red-rot of the spruce, &c., were known to foresters more than a hundred years ago. 1925Hawley & Hawes Man. b. A fungal disease of sugar cane characterized by red patches within the canes.
1907Bull. Hawaiian Sugar Planters' Assoc. Exper. Station vii. 25 The fungus is Colletotrichum falcatum, and the disease it causes is called the ‘red rot’ of the cane. 1928F. S. Earle Sugar Cane v. 154 The red rot fungus gains entrance to the stalks through borer holes and other injuries. 1944Phytopathology XXXIV. 210 The lesions produced on the inoculated leaves were in all ways similar to lesions produced by virulent red-rot cultures. 1975Mycologia LXVII. 56 Perithecia produced by C[olletotrichum] graminicola most closely resemble those of Glomerella tucumanensis, the causal agent of the red rot of sugarcane... Carvajal and Edgerton..connected the conidial state, C. falcatum, with P[hysalospora] tucumanensis. The perfect state of this fungus was transferred by von Arx and Müller..to the genus Glomerella, and the name generally accepted today is G. tucumanensis.
