Etymology: < dialogue v. + -er suffix1. Compare slightly earlier dialogist n.In quot. 1609 translating Byzantine Greek διάλογος ‘dialogist’, the traditional epithet of Pope Gregory I (see Gregorian adj.) in the Greek Orthodox Church. Gregory is so called on account of his Dialogi (see note at dialogue n.).
A person who participates in, or writes, a dialogue; = dialogist n.
