An open-air religious meeting, spec. one held by Scottish Presbyterians during the reigns of Charles II and James II & VII (see conventicle n. 4c). Also in extended use. Cf. house conventicle n.

1670 in Rec. Parl. Scotl. to 1707 (2007) 1670/7/11 Whosoever..shall preach..at any of these meetings in the feild, or in any house wher ther be moe persons nor the house contains, so as some of them be without doors (which is heerby declared to be a feild conventicle)..shall be punishied with death and confiscation of ther goods.
