Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: astro- comb. form, -pyle comb. form.
Etymology: < astro- comb. form (in allusion to the radiate operculum) + -pyle comb. form. Compare German Astropyle (1888 or earlier).
Zoology.
An orifice in the capsule of phaeodarian actinopods, consisting of a tubular projection or proboscis arising from a radiate operculum.
