Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin lacerta.
Etymology: < classical Latin lacerta lizard (see lacert n.1), in post-classical Latin also in the names of iatrochemical preparations (1575 in lacerta viridis , lit. ‘green lizard’, a preparation of mercury and copper; compare sense 1) and denoting a constellation (J. Hevelius Uranographia (1687) 12).In sense 1 probably ultimately after the use of lacerta in the Paracelsian corpus alongside early modern German eydex lizard (German Eidechse : see ask n.2) to refer to lizards as used in medicine. The use of the Latin genitive form as postmodifier in star names is a practice that originated in post-classical Latin.
