Origin: Of uncertain origin. Perhaps formed within English, by derivation; perhaps modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: mechanics n., -o suffix.
Etymology: Origin uncertain. Perhaps < Meccan- , altered form of mechan- (in mechanics n.) + -o suffix (compare e.g. Oxo n., Brasso n.), perhaps after either mechano- comb. form or French mécano mechanic (1907; < mécan- (in mécanicien mechanician n.) + -o, suffix used in colloquial shortenings).The product was first marketed in 1902 by Elliot & Hornby, Liverpool, under the name ‘Mechanics Made Easy’. Compare:1986 B. Love & J. Gamble Meccano Syst. iii 34/2 At some time during 1907, the name Meccano was coined but it is not known exactly by whom. It had an Esperanto-like sound which was readily accepted by the growing international fraternity of Meccano model-builders.1997 Daily Tel. (Electronic ed.) 16 Aug. The name Meccano..was supposedly invented by George Jones, who became assistant managing director of the company.
