Biology and Medicine.
Originally: †a mucilaginous substance derived from gluten (obsolete). Later: any of a group of high-molecular-weight glycoproteins which are the main constituents of mucus and are found on the luminal surface of many glandular epithelial cells; such glycoproteins collectively; a secretion consisting of such glycoproteins. Also more generally (now rare): mucus; a mucoid substance.
