Origin: A borrowing from a Melanesian language.
Etymology: < a language of New Britain or Duke of York Island, probably originally imitative (compare quot. 1860 in note). Compare Tolai (New Britain) and Ramoaaina (Duke of York Island) murup, Tok Pisin muruk.On the ultimately imitative origin of the name compare:1860 G. Bennett Gatherings of Naturalist in Austral. xi. 244 A new species of Cassowary..procured from the natives of New Britain... It utters a peculiar whistling, chirping sound, and, I am informed, it also emits a loud one, resembling the word Mooruk, whence, no doubt, is derived its native name. N.E.D. (1908) enters this under mooruk and gives only the pronunciation (mūə·ruk) /ˈmʊərʊk/.
A cassowary; spec. the dwarf cassowary, Casuarius bennetti, native to the highlands of New Guinea and New Britain.
