Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with English elements; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: Latin odōr- , odor , -i- connective, -phore comb. form.
Etymology: < classical Latin odōr-, odor odour n. + -i- connective + -phore comb. form, after German Odoriphor (H. Zwaardemaker Die Physiologie des Geruchs (1895) xiv. 240).
Chemistry and Physiology.
A chemical group whose presence in the molecules of a substance causes the substance to have a smell. Also called osmophore.
