Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek περικάρπιον.
Etymology: < Hellenistic Greek περικάρπιον bracelet < ancient Greek περι- peri- prefix + καρπός wrist (see carpo- comb. form1) + -ιον , neuter of -ιος , suffix forming adjectives. Compare post-classical Latin pericarpium (1684 or earlier), French péricarpe (1762), Italian pericarpio bracelet (1716). Compare metacarpion n.Compare also epicarpium a plaster to the wrist (1688 or earlier) < Hellenistic Greek ἐπικάρπιος , adjective, on or for the wrist (also as a noun, neuter ἐπικάρπιον , in sense ‘part of the hand near the wrist’) < ancient Greek ἐπι- epi- prefix + καρπός wrist (see carpo- comb. form1) + -ιος, suffix forming adjectives. Compare post-classical Latin epicarpium (1713 or earlier), French épicarpe (1743 or earlier). In Latin and French this was apparently the more usual term.
Medicine. Obsolete.
A plaster applied to the wrist, formerly used as a cure for various disorders.
