Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Piarist.
Etymology: < German Piarist (1777 in the source translated in quot. 1799) < post-classical Latin piar- (in the title patres scholarum piarum ‘fathers of the pious schools’, the Piarists being the regular clerks of religious schools (Italian Scuole Pie )) + German -ist -ist suffix.Post-classical Latin patres scholarum piarum is < classical Latin patrēs , plural of pater father (see pater n.2) + scholārum , genitive plural of schola school n.1 + piārum , feminine genitive plural of pius pious (see pious adj.).
Roman Catholic Church.
A member of the Order of the Pious Schools, a religious order devoted to providing free education for children.The order was founded in Rome in the early 17th cent. by St Joseph Calasanctius (1556–1648).
