Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French piléole.
Etymology: < French piléole (C. F. Brisseau de Mirbel Élémens de physiol. végétale (1815) I. 63) < classical Latin pīleolus (see pileolus n.).
Botany. Now rare.
A cap-like sheath formed by the cotyledon around the plumule of a grass or sedge.
