Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish pilón.
Etymology: < Mexican Spanish pilón (probably 1816), specific sense development of Spanish pilón sugar-loaf (more fully pilón de azúcar ; so called on account of its conical shape) < pila pile n.6 + -ón -oon suffix.
U.S. regional (chiefly south-western).
In Mexico and the south-western United States: a small gift given to a customer who is making a purchase or settling an account; the action of giving such a gift. Also in extended use.

1892 Dial. Notes 1 251 Pilón.., the gratuity given by merchants to customers, whenever accounts are settled.
1932 H. W. Bentley Dict. Spanish Terms in Eng. 180 Pilon,..a favor; a gratuity. Literally the word signifies a small cone-shaped cake of sugar. It may be conjectured that a small dulce of this sort constituted the pilon originally.
1962 E. B. Atwood Regional Vocab. Texas vii. 128 Modern stores are becoming less and less inclined to give pilón.
1990 New Yorker 5 Feb. 100/1 He said, let us give this poor man a pilón, and he added two votes making a total of 202.
