Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: beer n.1, hall n.1
Etymology: < beer n.1 + hall n.1In quot. 1837 translating Old English bēorsele beer hall, hall where alcoholic drink is served, banqueting hall (compare mead-hall n. at mead n.1 Compounds 2). In use with reference to Germany after German Bierhalle (1837 or earlier). With use in South African contexts compare Afrikaans bierhal ( < Dutch bierhal (1869 or earlier) < German Bierhalle).
A large room or establishment in which beer is served and consumed.Many modern beer halls are typically modelled on those traditionally found in Germany and provide other refreshments, food, and sometimes entertainment.In South Africa during the mid 20th cent., beer halls were public establishments in black townships which sold beer made from sorghum and were run by municipal authorities.
