Etymology: < classical Latin quīnquāgēnārius consisting of fifty, fifty years old, in post-classical Latin also (as noun) captain of fifty (Vetus Latina, Vulgate; < quīnquāgēnī fifty each (see quinquagene n.) + -ārius -ary suffix1) + -an suffix. Compare earlier quinquagenary n.
