Etymology: < rim n.2 + burst, past participle of burst v. (see discussion of forms at that entry). Sc. National Dict. (at Rim n.3) records the noun (in form rimburst) as still in use in 1968 in Orkney, Caithness (obsolescent), Angus, and Perthshire.
Chiefly Scottish and English regional (northern and midlands).
