单词 roemer
释义

roemern.

Brit. /ˈrəʊmə/, /ˈrəːmə/, U.S. /ˈroʊmər/
Forms: 1800s– roemer, 1800s 2000s– römer. Also with capital initial.
Origin: A borrowing from German. Perhaps also partly a borrowing from Dutch. Etymons: German Römer; Dutch roemer.
Etymology: < German Römer rummer n. In later use in quots. mentioning such glasses in a Dutch geographical or cultural context (e.g. quots. 1897, 1942, 1972) perhaps also partly < Dutch roemer rummer n. (see below). Compare earlier rummer n.The first-syllable vowels of the German and Dutch words are pronounced /øː/ and // respectively, and it is sometimes difficult to determine whether the English spelling roemer is intended to represent the Dutch word or the German word (in the latter case, it shows substitution of oe for the foreign grapheme ö). Not fully naturalized in English; O.E.D. Suppl. (1982) gives the pronunciation as (rȫ·məɹ) /ˈrøːmə(r)/.
A type of decorated German or Dutch wine glass, typically having a wide base and a long, ornamental knobbed or ‘prunted’ stem. Cf. rummer n.
