Etymology: < the name of Francis Melvin Rogallo (1912–2009), U.S. engineer, and his wife Gertrude S. Rogallo (1914–2008), who invented this kind of wing ( U.S. Patent 2,546,078 (1951), filed in 1948, and U.S. Patent 2,751,172 (1956)).In their patents the Rogallos called their invention a ‘flexible wing’.
