单词 rummer
释义

rummern.

Brit. /ˈrʌmə/, U.S. /ˈrəmər/
Forms: 1600s rummar, 1600s–1700s romer, 1600s– rummer.
Origin: Probably of multiple origins. Probably partly a borrowing from Dutch. Probably partly a borrowing from Middle Low German. Probably partly a borrowing from German. Etymons: Dutch roemer; Middle Low German rȫmer; German Römer.
Etymology: Probably partly < Dutch roemer, (now regional; rare after mid 18th cent.) romer, (regional: West Flanders) rummer, rommer, partly < Middle Low German rȫmer (German regional (Low German) römer), and partly < German Römer (1609; 1589 as †roemer), all of which show specific uses of nouns denoting ‘person from Rome’ in these languages (Middle Dutch Rōmere (Dutch †Romer ), Middle Low German rȫmer , German Römer (Middle High German rōmǣre , Old High German rōmāri )), all cognate with or formed similarly to Romeware n. Compare West Frisian romer ( < Dutch), Danish rømer , †rømmer (1589). Compare later roemer n.An alternative etymology of the Dutch and Middle Low German nouns which derives them respectively < Dutch roemen and Middle Low German rōmen ‘to praise’ (see reme v.), presumably with reference to the use of the glass in toasts, is now generally rejected on chronological grounds, although some of the Dutch forms may result from secondary association with the Dutch verb. The form romer could alternatively reflect German Römer ; if so, early instances of this form could alternatively be taken as showing earlier instances of roemer n.
A type of large glass for alcoholic drinks, usually with a rounded shape and a short or heavy stem. Cf. roemer n.Rummers were commonly used until the first half of the 19th cent.
