(A title for) a commander-in-chief, general, or chief magistrate in ancient Greece, and subsequently in the Roman Empire and the Byzantine Empire.The role of a strategos varied over time and from place to place, and could include both military and political responsibilities, as at classical Athens or in the Achaean confederacy.
