Etymology: < (i) Middle French, French subhastation (second half of the 14th cent.; 1321 in Old French as subbastacion ), and its etymon (ii) post-classical Latin subhastation-, subhastatio auction (5th cent.) < subhastat- , past participial stem of subhastare to put up to auction, sell by auction (3rd or 4th cent.; < classical Latin sub hastā under the spear: see sub hasta adv.) + classical Latin -iō -ion suffix¹. Compare Old Occitan subastacio (13th cent.), Spanish subastación (early 15th cent.), Italian subastazione (1357 as †subastacione).
