Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French subhastation; Latin subhastation-, subhastatio.
Etymology: < (i) Middle French, French subhastation (second half of the 14th cent.; 1321 in Old French as subbastacion ), and its etymon (ii) post-classical Latin subhastation-, subhastatio auction (5th cent.) < subhastat- , past participial stem of subhastare to put up to auction, sell by auction (3rd or 4th cent.; < classical Latin sub hastā under the spear: see sub hasta adv.) + classical Latin -iō -ion suffix1. Compare Old Occitan subastacio (13th cent.), Spanish subastación (early 15th cent.), Italian subastazione (1357 as †subastacione).
Now historical.
A public auction as compelled by law. Also: the action or practice of selling property by such an auction. Cf. sub hasta adv.Chiefly in Continental European contexts.
