Etymology: < sub- prefix + typical adj. In sense 2 after subtype n.
1. Not quite typical; less than typical; (Zoology) deviating slightly from the type of a species or other taxon; spec. (in the quinary system of classification) designating a group of species considered to be of intermediate character between typical and aberrant forms (now historical).
