Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin summandus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin summandus (short for summandus numerus number to be added) (1695 or earlier), use as noun of gerundive of summare sum v.1Compare German Summand (1822 or earlier; 1821 or earlier as Summandus).
Mathematics.
1. Originally: any of two or more terms to be added together in symbolic algebra. In later use also: any of two or more numbers or quantities to be summed together (= addend n.).
