Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Greek ἔνθεος , -gen comb. form.

Etymology: < ancient Greek ἔνθεος divinely inspired (see entheos n.) + -gen comb. form, after hallucinogen n.The term was apparently coined as an alternative to hallucinogen n. and psychedelic n., which were perceived as having negative connotations.

A psychedelic substance (typically a plant or fungal extract) or drug, esp. when used in a religious ritual or to bring about a spiritual experience.
