Etymology: < Arabia as a name for the Arabian peninsula < classical Latin Arabia < ancient Greek Ἀραβία < Hellenistic Greek Ἀραβ- , Ἄραψ Arab n.1 (although this is apparently first attested later) + -ία -ia suffix1.Arabia occurs as a place name in English contexts from Old English onwards (in early use sometimes with Latin case inflections), beside later Araby , Arabie , etc. (see Araby n. and adj.).
