Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: meta- prefix, chromatism n.
Etymology: < meta- prefix + chromatism n.; in later use in sense 1 probably after French métachromatisme (1866 in Littré of the colour of hair, skin, etc.), although in quot. 1876 at sense 1a apparently an independent formation; in sense 2 after German Metachromasie (see metachromasia n.). Compare metachromatic adj., metachrome n., and metachromism n.
