Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; perhaps modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: psammo- comb. form, -phile comb. form.
Etymology: < psammo- comb. form + -phile comb. form, perhaps after French psammophile, adjective ( J. Thurmann Essai de phytostatique (1849) I. xiii. 268). Compare earlier psammophilous adj.
Ecology.
A. n.
A plant that thrives in sand or sandy soil (cf. psammophyte n. at psammo- comb. form ). Later also: an animal that lives in sand, or in a sandy habitat.
