Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin māteriātiōn- , māteriātiō , matēria , -ation suffix.
Etymology: In sense 1 < classical Latin māteriātiōn-, māteriātiō woodwork, carpentry < māteriāt- , past participial stem of māteriārī to fetch or prepare timber (one isolated attestation in Caesar), a deponent verb corresponding to māteriāre materiate v. + -iō -ion suffix1. In sense 2 < classical Latin matēria matter n.1 + -ation suffix; compare earlier materiate adj. and n.
Obsolete.
1. The felling and preparation of timber (see quots.). rare.In quot. 1623 selling is probably an error for felling.Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.
