Etymology: < scientific Latin Nocardia (V. Trevisan Generi e specie delle Batteriacee (1889) 9) < the name of Edmond I. E. Nocard (1850–1903), French veterinary pathologist + -ia -ia suffix¹.

Bacteriology.

A genus of Gram-positive, aerobic actinomycetes whose members typically form mycelia that tend to fragment into rod-shaped or coccoid elements, and are widely distributed in soil and water, sometimes acting as (usually opportunistic) pathogens of humans and other animals.
