单词 bear dance
释义

bear dancen.

Brit. /ˈbɛː dɑːns/, /ˈbɛː dans/, U.S. /ˈbɛr ˌdæns/
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: bear n.1, dance n.
Etymology: < bear n.1 + dance n.Earlier currency in sense 1 may be implied by the following, perhaps alluding to a place where bears were made to dance, or to an inn or tavern whose sign depicted dancing bears (perhaps The Three Dancing Bears, an alehouse in St Katherine’s by the Tower alluded to in the works of Ben Jonson from 1622): 1570 Braineles Blessing of Bull (single sheet) Imprinted at S. Katherins beside the Tower of London, ouer against the Beare daunce, by Alexander Lacie. With this sense compare Russian medvež′ja pljaska (19th cent. or earlier) and also Old Russian medvěžnoe pljasanie (16th cent.), both literally ‘bear dance’. In sense 2 the word denotes a variety of dances (see the note at the definition), many of which have semantically unrelated names in the languages of the respective peoples; for an exception compare Cree maskosimow (verb) dances the bear dance ( < maskw- bear + -isimo + -w, 3rd person singular ending), and hence (with a derivative suffix) maskosimowin (noun) bear dance. With use with reference to Northern Asia compare Russian medvež′ja pljaska (1804 in I. F. Krusenstern with reference to a dance observed in Kamchatka).

2. Any of various ritual or ceremonial dances practised by indigenous peoples in North America and Northern Asia. Also (more generally): the ceremonial event at which this dance is performed. There is considerable variation in the form and function of bear dances. They are often performed in spring as bears come out of hibernation with the movements of the dance inspired by those of the bear. Among the Ute, the dancers initially stand facing one another in two rows before splitting into pairs and dancing back and forth in a line while music is performed on the morache. Other dances are performed in a circular motion, as among the Cherokee, Nganasan, and Winnebago. Among other indigenous peoples, such as the Cree and Maidu, dancers perform in bearskins with the purpose of providing protection from illness or bear attacks (see e.g. quot. 1905), while the Khanty and Mansi perform a bear dance and hold a feast following the killing of a bear to seek forgiveness.
